CHOOSING TO CARE... fostering or adopting children with h.i.v.

Complications index

infections

Even healthy children are susceptible to infections, so children with HIV are not only at risk for regular childhood illness but also suffer from infections specific to those with compromised immune systems.

adherence
With HIV medications, a missed dose here or there can lead to failure of the drugs.  Since an alternative is not always guaranteed, it's incredibly important that children adhere 100% to their medicine schedule.

medication failure
At some point, it is always necessary for children with HIV to change medicines to due medication failure.  Signs of failure are outlined as well as reasons why some medicines fail.

loss
HIV is a progressive disease and the implications it has on an infected child are enormous.  At some point, there might be no medications available to your foster or adopted child, and you might lose your child.
