Although most children with HIV were born infected, there are other causes of HIV infection in children.  These causes are discussed in this section.  

universal precautions
In order to prevent the accidental spread of HIV, a basic set of universal precautions has been developed.  Here these precautions are outlined and certain myths are cleared up.

accidental exposure
When someone is exposed to HIV, there are certain steps that can be taken to prevent HIV infection, and those steps are detailed in this section.  

(Note:  You should always contact a doctor if you feel you or someone else in your home has been exposed.)
