CHOOSING TO CARE... fostering or adopting children with h.i.v.

Disclosure index

confidentiality
If you take in a foster child with HIV, you are required to protect the child's confidentiality and to not disclose the child's HIV status.  This also applies to a child who is placed with you for adoption until the adoption is final.

daycares and schools
Due to confidentiality, you will most likely not disclose the child's HIV to his/her school.  However, there are some things you should keep in mind before sending the child to school.

education
You might find yourself in the role of 'educator' while you are caring for a child with HIV.  Whether this role will apply to social workers or to parents of friends who might learn of the child's HIV status, be prepared to find yourself educating people.

telling the child
There's the possibility you might have a child placed with you who is unaware that he/she is HIV-positive.  If you are given the choice on whether to tell the child and how, you will want to keep many different things in mind.
